Self Made Self Paid

Music and Fashion

Two years ago I made the tough decision of not renewing the lease for GQ Clothing Boutique in Tennessee. Instead, I moved all operations back to Georgia a month before the big shutdown. Thanking God for the wisdom, I started this blog shortly afterwards. At the time the business world began to move into the digital age. Dealing with a lot of emotions and set backs, starting the blog placed me in the position to expand and open the door for international interactions with other fashion brands. Along with that, it forced me to learn new skills and sharpen the ones I’d already possess. Self Made, Self Paid took on a whole new definition in my career and there’s no turning back. As we enter into the 6th year of Georgia Queen Clothing, post pandemic will be slightly different than before and I’m happy!

GQC first fashion show was a magical experience for me. At the time, I was a sales manager for a well known retail brand. They had no clue that I had started a fashion line. Oooppss! Lol. So, I took a day off and traveled to Tennessee for my first show. Backstage was pure chaos! No, really it was fun. I had approximately 20-30 models. All were beautiful and had a little alternative edge. Once it was time for GQC, I heard the beats of, “Welcome to Atlanta.” It was fashionably “Gangsta!” The crowd went wild. Of course, this was part of the beginning of Georgia Queen Clothing.

Music has always been a huge part of GQC. One of my main clients is a music artist out of Knoxville. I always made sure the music matched the flair of each GQ clothing collection. The most recent collection was inspired by a well known music artist of the 1950’s. As a designer, I search for inspiration and bring the vision to life through the sketches/illustrations. The end result is showcasing the garments on the runway.

The Fashion and Music industries are similar in many ways. It’s called show business! I talk about this in a previous blog post. Recently, I listened to an interview by former bassist of The Revolution, Brown Mark. I’m most impressed by his career story and the advice he shared given to him by his Mother. You can read about it in his autobiography, My Life In The Purple Kingdom. Very fascinating!

That’s not the the only thing I’m impressed by….the fashion of his current group “Bad Boys of Paisley” formally known as Mazarati reminds me of a GQC fashion show. They’ve gone from female inspired clothing to leather pants, custom hats, and statement jewelry. When I first discovered the band I said, “Who are these people?” Totally not my era, but I love it!

Let’s talk about a music artist I know personally. I used to do her makeup for shows nearly 20 years ago! We’re talking about Atlanta’s own Ebony Love.

Ebony has worked with well known rappers such as Rick Ross and Young Joc. She’s a true Atlanta native who came up in the music scene at the young age of 12. Ebony expanded her passion to acting while continuing her music journey. You can read more about her music career below!

Ebony creative style of dressing is uniquely her own. Bright prints, petticoats, and abstract hair definitely sets her apart from all the rest. I like referring to her style as a modern day “Marie Antoinette” with a little soul. I can not wait to work with her again.

Check out Ebony’s most recent project called, “The Art of Sacrifice.” We all have sacrificed to operate in our passions and to be uniquely our own. The Self Made, Self Paid path is not for everyone, but admired by many. Thankful for our core values and families the journey is well worth the ride.
